8 Defenders That Will Be In Roy Hodgson's Provisional England Squad (And 1 That Won't)
3. Phil Jagielka
Caps: 24 Goals: 1 With Ferdinand and Terry now out of the equation, Jagielka has established himself as Cahill's first choice partner at the centre of Hodgson's defence. The Toffees' defender was a mainstay throughout England's qualifying campaign and, if fit, is expected to start England's first group match. A fearless defender, Jagielka possesses excellent positional sense and his communication with Cahill will be vital when facing some of the trickiest strikers in the game. However, there has been recent concern about whether or not Jagielka will be ruled out of the squad through injury. The Everton man has been out of action since sustaining a hamstring problem in his club's defeat to Chelsea back in late February. Roberto Martinez has insisted that he will not be rushed back into action and Hodgson will be sweating on further updates about his key defender.
