8 Everton Players Who Won Trophies After Leaving Goodison

8. Marco Materazzi

Italian Marco Materazzi is perhaps the most high profile example of players who have won trophies since leaving Everton. Originally signed from Perugia by Walter Smith in the summer of 1998, Materazzi only spent a season in England before moving on. During that time he made a total of 27 games, managing to get booked 11 times and sent off four times in the process. He returned to Perugia the following season, scoring 12 goals and breaking the Seria A record of most goals scored by a defender in a single season, previously held by Daniel Passarella. He then joined Inter Milan; where he would go on to win five consecutive league titles, as well as several Coppa Italia triumphs and Supercoppa Italiana successes. He would even feature in the Champions League final in 2010, replacing Diego Milito in the clubs€™ 2-0 victory against Bayern Munich in the final. His international career also proved to be successful, although most will remember him for the infamous Zinedine Zidane head-butt. In that memorable final against France, he managed to concede the penalty from which France took the lead and then go on to score the equaliser from an Andrea Pirlo corner. Then came the tournament€™s worst and most memorable moment, as he verbally insulted Zidane, who responded by head-butting the Italian in the chest. Zidane was of course sent off, ending the career of one of football€™s greatest on the worst of notes. Materazzi would score the second penalty in the eventual penalty shootout, with the Italians going on to win the tournament and leave Materazzi a World Cup winner.
