8 Everton Players Who Won Trophies After Leaving Goodison
7. Martin Keown
Martin Keown is best known for his association with Arsenal, but before that success came a spell at Everton. He signed for the club from Aston Villa in August 1989, with manager Colin Harvey paying £750,000 for his services. Unlike a few on this list, he can be considered a success at Goodison Park, having been a major force in his two years, with his first year at the club yielding a top six finish. He later joined Arsenal for £2million in February 1992, re-joining the club he had left for Aston Villa in 1986. He would go on to play over 300 times for the Gunners, winning nine major trophies overall, with multiple league and domestic cup triumphs as well as a UEFA Cup Winners Cup in 1993-94. His defensive partnership with Tony Adams is widely regarded as one of the best centre back pairings in the history of the Premier League, as well as on the international stage, where Keown featured in four major international football finals including the 1998 and 2002 World Cup. He made 43 caps for the national side in a 10-year period. Similar to fellow defender Marco Materazzi, he also courted controversy, most notably in a game against Manchester United in 2003. When United were rewarded a late penalty, Ruud van Nistelrooy stepped up but instead hit the bar. Immediately after that miss Keown and Ray Parlour confronted the Dutchman, with Keown hitting him on the back of the head in a widely criticised move.
