8 Football Teams Which Went The Whole Season Undefeated
3. Benfica (1972 - 73, 1977 - 78)
As Portugal’s most successful club, it almost doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that Benfica were able to complete an undefeated season – picking up the 1972/73 Portuguese league title along the way. However, even more amazing is the fact that Benfica have earned the title “The Invincibles” on two separate occasions and, the second time, they didn’t even win the league… What!?
Following an incredible, unbeatable league-winning season that saw them clinch the title with a huge 18 points to spare, Benfica were able to replicate their invincibility just five years later during the 1977/78 campaign. Unbelievably, though, after three consecutive league titles, a record of 21 wins and 9 draws wasn’t good enough to make it four, and saw S.L. Benfica finish as runners-up to F.C. Porto… on goal difference. Ouch.
It’s almost hard to believe, and Benfica’s extraordinary second unvanquished season is one that fans will be keen to push out of their memories.
