8 Bundesliga Sleeping Giants Who Could Topple Bayern Munich

5. Are Werder Bremen On Their Way Back To Former Glory?

Johan Micoud, Tim Borowski, Ailton and Ivan Klasnic were just some of the names that played for Werder Bremen when they last won the Bundesliga in the 2003-2004 season. Following their league triumph over 10 years ago, the closest the north-western club have come to winning another league was finishing runners-up in both the 2006-2006 season and 2007-2008. The following year, Bremen won the DFB-Pokal in 2008-2009, whilst also reaching the UEFA Cup final, losing 2-1 A.E.T. against Shakhtar Donetsk. The Bremen of late however have struggled in the league. After 14 years at the club, Thomas Schaaf left following a 14th placed finished. Bayer Leverkusen€™s Robin Dutt took over, finishing the 2013-2014 season two places higher, before lasting just two months into the 2014-2015 season. Former defender, Viktor Skrypnyk took over in October 2014, leading them to a 10th placed finish, just three points behind a Europa League spot €“ an improvement from previous seasons. Only time will tell as to how Bremen will do this coming season, but with the acquisition of Anthony Ujah and the contract extension of Zlatko Junuzovi‡, they have a real chance to challenge for a European spot in 2015-2016.
