8 Newcastle Stars Who've Played Their Last Game For The Magpies

3. Sylvain Marveaux

Last week Marveaux - alongside Hatem Ben Arfa - was described by ex-Newcastle left-back Olivier Bernard as the playmaker "who can provide Newcastle with the one thing they lacked last season - a killer pass into the box," in a frank interview with the Chronicle as well as being classified as "top-notch Premier League player" on his day. Attitude issues and numerous injury lay-offs have contributed to the 28-year-old's stagnation at St James' Park in the three year since since he arrived from Rennes on a free transfer. He posed an immediate risk after reportedly failing an earlier medical at Liverpool and it's a claim the Frenchman disputes to this day. But the curse would strike just 45 minutes into his first Magpies start against Everton in November 2011 with a recurring groin problem ruling him out for the rest of the season. And his career on Tyneside would follow a similar stop-start pattern that has prevented him from displaying the creative gifts that convinced Newcastle to sign him in the first place. The tail-end of the 2012/13 campaign was arguably the best period Marveaux has enjoyed in a black and white shirt with his assist for Papiss Cisse's late winner in the Europa League against Anzhi and his cute unlocking of a miserly Stoke rearguard to set up the Senegalese striker to score at the death again and seal a 2-1 victory. Marveaux's failure to nail down a regular spot in Alan Pardew's starting line-up has put him on course for a summer exit and it's been reported that Newcastle have slapped a £3 million price tag on his head.
