9 Football Legends Who Ended Up Hated By Their Fans

6. Cesc Fabregas

Empty promises aren't unexpected in football, but there was something about Cesc Fabregas' apparent commitment to Arsenal that felt very real, even after he left for Barcelonaafter taking the Premier League by storm. At Arsenal Fabregas developed over seven outstanding seasons, and as testament of his success, when he left for Barca after a protracted transfer saga in 2011, Arsenal fans showed no resentment, seemingly at peace (despite some questions over Arsenal's ambition), as if they had praised Fabregas as one of their own and sent him back home. And Fabregas reciporated, proclaiming his love even beyond the seas, and claimed he would never sign for another English club, basically ensuring that sooner of later he'd be back at Arsenal. It came as a surprise then that when Fabregas became available, Arsenal was not his destination, with the Spaniard joining Chelsea in a big-money deal that was very much affordable for Arsene Wenger. Naturally fans exploded with rage, pointing to a (fake) quote that suggested he had said he should be killed if he ever appeared in a Chelsea shirt, as the player suggested he had €œunfinished business€ in England, and presumably went to bed on a pile of money. To say Arsenal fans will welcome him with fire is an understatement.
