9 Players Who Have Flourished Since Leaving Man Utd

6. Diego Forlan

Uruguay international, Diego Forlan, impressed Sir Alex Ferguson whilst he was playing for Independiente early in the millennium. The United boss was quick to snap him up in 2002 for a fee of £7.5 million but he remained at the club for just two full seasons. Despite promising so much and even earning his own chant from the United faithful, Forlan failed to impress on a regular occasion. In his 63 appearances for United, he scored just 10 goals, although two of which were in a 2-1 win against bitter rivals Liverpool. Ultimately he did not impress the fans nor the manager, and found himself on the transfer list at the end of his second season at Old Trafford. He then moved to Villarreal and later Atletico Madrid, where he averaged over 0.5 goals per game for both clubs. This is a highly impressive record in a top European League and so proves that Forlan was a quality player, he just never shone for United. Now winding down his career in Japan, he has gone on to represent his native Uruguay numerous times, most recently at this years World Cup. He was undoubtedly a talented player but for whatever reason he wasn't able to flourish until he left Old Trafford.
