Goalhanger is a very strong and demonised word in football. However, the offside rule does its best to rule out the impact these players have on the fairness of a game. Of course, not every serial offside offender is a goalhanger, but when you’ve had the flag raised on you 328 times, it may be worth delaying your forward runs slightly.

Emmanuel Adebayor probably isn’t a name most people were expecting to crop up in this article, but the Togolese striker finds himself burdened with this unfortunate record. In his ten Premier League seasons, Adebayor played for four different teams in Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham and finally Crystal Palace.

Although a consistent goalscorer (for the first three teams mentioned at least), he could have added a lot more goals to his tally if he avoided being called offside a staggering 328 times. Despite this, his offside stats certainly aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when someone says ‘Adebayor’ in North London.
