What Happened?
Chris Hughton's recently promoted side were powerless to resist Manchester United, who sauntered to a 3-0 victory, with Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Fletcher scoring in the first half and Ryan Giggs adding a third after the break. It could've been very different, however, had Andy Carroll, wearing the number nine shirt for the first time, steered a 10th minute header on target.
League Position: 17th
Was It A Sign Of Things To Come?
Newcastle were steady under Hughton, who handled his media duties with great humility and dignity in the face of mounting speculation over his immediate future, and a good bet for a mid-table finish. The 5-1 slaughtering of Sunderland was a particular highlight and a mohair of Magpies fans were aggrieved when Hughton was sacked in December and replaced by Alan Pardew. Carroll was then sold for £35 million to Liverpool despite Pardew's assurances on the contrary, before the new boss began to positively turn heads by inspiring his team to rescue a point after finding themselves 4-0 down to Arsenal at halftime.
Final League Position: 12th
