All Newcastle's South Americans Ranked From Worst To Best

7. Diego Gavilan (Paraguay)

Newcastle United: 2000-03 Position: Defensive-Midfielder Nationality: Paraguayan Premier League Appearances: 7 Premier League Goals: 1 International Caps (Goals): 43 (0) Diego Gavilan certainly had technical ability, but Sir Bobby Robson's £2 million signing from Cerro Porteno in 2000 just did not have the strength to compete in the Premier League. Largely a reserve during his time on Tyneside, Gavilan was tasked with bulking up in the gym but he was unable to do so quick enough - meaning he made just seven Premier League appearances. He did score against Coventry City in April 2000, but he was sent out on loan to UAG, Internacional and Udinese during his three years at the club. At the age of just 22 he was then sent back to Internacional, and he has amassed 43 Paraguay caps in all, it's just a shame he couldn't hack it physically in England.
