All Newcastle's South Americans Ranked From Worst To Best
6. Christian Bassedas (Argentina)
Newcastle United: 2000-03 Position: Midfielder Nationality: Argentine Premier League Appearances: 24 Premier League Goals: 1 International Caps (Goals): 22 (0) Argentine footballers have had mixed success at Newcastle - and Christian Bassedas' time on Tyneside can be described as "lukewarm" at best. After scoring 21 goals in 267 appearances over 11 seasons at Velez Sarsfield, Sir Bobby Robson signed the midfielder for £3.5 million in 2000. However, the 22-cap Argentine struggled to adapt to the pace of the Premier League, being used only fleetingly by Robson. Loaned out to Tenerife in 2002, Bassedas made just 24 Premier League appearances, scoring once against Chelsea in 2001, before he was allowed to return to Argentina with Newell's Old Boys in 2003. Unfortunately for Bassedas, he was also forced to retire due to a knee injury that same year
