Engineering a 1-0 victory over Arsenal's most-hated rivals in Tottenham Hotspur during this season's Champions League group stage can only boost your profile, and put a smug smile on Gunners' fans faces. But that's not the least of Schmidt's appeal.

When managing Red Bull Salzburg in 2014, he made an impression on then-Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiolaby hammering Bayern 3-0 in a friendly game during the winter break. And while it may only have been a friendly, Guardiola declared afterwards: “I’ve never in my career come across a team that play’s with such intensity." They went on to win the Austrian league and cup double.

There have been rumours circulating that the 49-year-old German could be sacked from his current role with Bayer Leverkusen following an indifferent league campaign thus far and amidst reports of recent touchline indiscipline. Nevertheless, Leverkusen are in the second round of the Champions League so he'll be hoping the competition provides a welcome catalyst.
