Arsenal Transfer News: Michael Essien to Emirates?

Arsenal are looking to secure the signing of Chelsea's Ghanaian midfielder Michael Essien on a season-long loan deal.

They claim that The Gunners boss is desperate to bring in another midfielder to the Emirates today after the departure of Alex Song to Barcelona this month and having missed out on top target Nuri Sahin, who decided to join Liverpool. The Metro reports that Wenger had been tracking Toulouse's enforcer Etienne Capoue and also Anderlecht's Lucas Biglia, but his eyes are now set on Chelsea's forgotten man. They report that Arsenal have made an inquiry for Essien last night, but the club are waiting on a response from Chelsea. 29-year-old Essien has yet to feature for the Blues this season and he has reportedly been subject of a possible £7 million move to Fenerbache. Though The Metro claims that Chelsea are only interested in a loan deal at this stage, leaving Arsenal in pole position for his signature. Last summer's deadline day transfer window saw Arsene Wenger push through a move to take Chelsea's Yossi Benayoun on a season-long loan deal. They will have until 11pm tonight to strike up a similar type of deal for Essien.
