Arsenal Transfers - 10 Dream Replacements For Thomas Vermaelen
8. Jan Vertonghen
A controversial option, but one of which most Arsenal fans probably go to bed dreaming about. Tottenham centre-back Jan Vertonghen put a number of interested suitors on red alert earlier this year by suggesting he could quit White Hart Lane should Spurs fail to qualify for this season's Champions League. The Lilywhites didn't qualify for Europe's premiere competition meaning by his own admission he could be willing to move this summer. Spanish heavyweights Barcelona are keen on signing the Belgian defender while Arsenal too would be keen on poaching the centre-half from their fierce north London rivals, though Vertonghen has since distanced himself from his previous claims and revealed he has been offered a new five-year deal at the Lane. Nevertheless, the Gunners could test the waters with a bid and may turn the defender's head with the offer of Champions League football this season. Should such a dramatic transfer come to fruition however, it would prove just as combustible as Sol Campbell's switch from Spurs to Arsenal in 2001.
