Arsenal Transfers - 10 Dream Replacements For Thomas Vermaelen
7. Benedikt Howedes
Alternatively, Arsenal could sign a World Cup winner this summer. Benedikt Howedes may well have endured a difficult spell with Schalke last season, with injury limiting the centre-back to just 19 Bundesliga appearances, but he bounced back from his treatment room nightmare in style by playing all seven of Germany's games at the finals in Brazil to help his country to glory. Howedes was one of many stars who excelled for Joachim Low's men this summer and he could star for Arsenal, too. The Germany international could offer Arsene Wenger a variety of options at Emirates Stadium in that he can also play at right-back meaning not only would he be a suitable replacement for Vermaelen and cover for Koscielny, but could also deputise for Mathieu Debuchy. There are a few sticking points to consider however. Howedes has been with Schalke his entire career and extended his contract at the club back in March. The Bundesliga side are also notoriously difficult to do business with as well, as the Gunners found out to their dismay during their failed attempt to sign Julian Draxler last year.
