French defender Pascal Cygan would set hearts aflutter amongst the massed ranks of Arsenal’s North Bank pretty much every time he touched the ball.

Cygan was much vaunted as the man to replace the older generation including Tony Adams and Martin Keown when he joined the Gunners for £2 million from Lille.

It became evident during his first season that he simply wasn’t good enough. The Frenchman sadly lacked pace, which was cruelly exposed on several occasions.

A chant consisting of ‘he’s bald, he’s poop, he gets a game when no-one’s fit’ somewhat outlined what Arsenal fans thought of his abilities – or lack thereof.

Cygan left the club having made just 20 appearances in four years, as he followed Robert Pires’ path to Spain with Villarreal.
