It’s a risk, everybody knows that.

Even during his pomp, Carlos Tevez always needed an extra carrier for his baggage. His list of misdemeanours included unlawfully signing for West Ham and costing an expensive lawsuit, disrespectfully labelling his Manchester United boss ‘an old man’ and abandoning his club for a six-month golf holiday. But wherever he went, there was always one constant - goals.

The Boca Juniors forward scored 114 across his seven seasons in the country, and impressed the public with his commitment and never-say-die attitude - which made his refusal to get off the bench in September 2011 all the more peculiar. Anyway, he may now be 32 and in the twilight of his career but the forward is still a top player. The Boca Juniors striker has already had Chelsea and West Ham sniffing around this summer.

It may be nine years later and times have changed, not least the size of the Argentine’s wage demands (and not for the better), but if he is even half the player he was during his first spell in England, Arsenal should take the gamble.
