The 27-year-old Englishman has seen his role in the team diminish significantly since his initial debut as a fresh faced teenager.

Originally regarded as the long term successor to the left back position left vacant by Gael Clichy, his tendency to be caught out by opponents and also recent injury problems have left Arsenal needing to make a decision which could very well see Gibbs plying his club football elsewhere next season.

Wenger’s switch to the 3-4-3 formation during the latter half of the last campaign has seen Hector Bellerin and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain excel in the right and left wing back roles respectively. This coupled with the recent recruitment of highly rated left back Sead Kolansic who arrives from Germany on a free and the consistent performances of Nacho Monreal, Gibbs faces the reality of becoming a third or fourth choice option for the manager to call upon.

Arguably coming into his prime in regards to age, Gibbs may well seek to rebuild his flailing career elsewhere. Arsenal could expect an abundance of offers from lower premier league sides who would greatly benefit from his Premier League experience.
