Arsenal Transfers: 5 Reasons Gunners Should Buy Julian Draxler
2. Arsenal Cannot Go The Rest Of The Season With Just Giroud
The performances of Olivier Giroud this season have been very impressive. After a difficult first 12 months with the club, the striker has returned this year and showcased just why the Gunners parted with around £10 million to secure his signature. The Frenchman's goal return has been consistent, but not prolific. He currently averages a goal every other game, finding the net 14 times in 31 matches. However, Giroud's importance to the team is not based on his goal contribution but many other aspects of his game, which often go unnoticed. Essentially, Giroud acts as the fulcrum and pivot of the attack. The 27-year-old provides the creative players of Ozil and Santi Cazorla with a focal point, a target man from which they can feed off. The Frenchman holds the ball up, he frustrates centre-halves and, crucially, he creates space for others. It is rare for a striker to do the 'dirty work', but in a side blessed with play-makers like Ozil and Cazorla, that is exactly what Giroud does. However, it is naïve and unrealistic of Arsenal to think that Giroud can provide this for the whole season. Quite simply he needs support. The Gunners are without Theo Walcott for the rest of the campaign and Lukas Podolski's continued fitness problems leave Arsenal short in the striking department. If Giroud were to get injured, the club would be forced to start Nicklas Bendtner or Yaya Sanogo up-front, strikers who will not win them the Premier League. If Wenger wants to challenge for the title then he needs an attacking player of high quality to come in, Draxler can be that man.
