Arsenal Transfers: 5 Reasons Why Karim Benzema Is Not The Right Man For Arsenal
3. He Has Become Too Used To Playing Second Fiddle To Ronaldo
A feature of his time at Real Madrid has been Benzema's need to play second best to Cristiano Ronaldo, quite rightly, with the Portuguese legend scoring well over 35 goals in the league alone in each of the last three seasons. However, this has been only to the detriment of Benzema's development, a player who when bought in 2010 as a goalscoring striker for a whopping £35million, did not envisage how much the team would be focused on Ronaldo. The need to facilitate the skill of Ronaldo on the left flank has meant that Benzema has had to drastically alter his style of play since arriving at the Santiago Bernabeu. Far from being an out and out striker, he has been forced to become almost a second striker, constantly drifting out wide in an attempt to drag defenders out of position in order for Ronaldo to exploit to gap left behind. On the face of it this seems perfectly suited to Arsenal's style of play, with the Gunners bursting at the seams with midfielders capable of scoring, but when you consider that it fixes a problem that doesn't exist it pales into insignificance. Giroud is more than capable of playing other players in, and what Wenger needs is a true goalscorer, and at the moment at least, Benzema is not that player.
