Arsenal Transfers: 5 Reasons Why Karim Benzema Is Not The Right Man For Arsenal

2. He Doesn't Have The Best Scoring Record

That takes us nicely to our next point. Benzema is a very expensive striker for a man who only twice has scored 20 goals or more in a league season, with his best return coming in the 2011/12 campaign where he nabbed 21. Yes he is still 26 and yes his best years are still to come, but how much better at finding the net will he get after going several years of not scoring over 20. Even at Lyon in his younger days when he was the main man in a team that regularly won the French title and competed in the Champions League he never went over 20 in a league season. Whilst around 20 would be an improvement on Giroud's goal tally of 11 last season, it arguably would not be worth the big money the Gunners would spend on him. In the summer the club heavily pursued Luis Suarez and Gonzalo Higuain, both of whom scored more than Benzema, and in Suarez's case in particular, who scored 23, would represent better value than Benzema. Liverpool's reluctance to sell Suarez to Arsenal and the Gunners' refusal to pay more than £23million for Higuain told their own story, and it all points to the fact that Wenger will not spend more than necessary if he moves for Benzema. His lack of prolific scoring in recent years and indeed throughout his career would take a while to rectify if it is at all possible, and the Gunners would do well to look elsewhere for a man who can regularly find the back of the net.
