10. Overall Picture
It's very tempting to zero in on how Cardiff City under Mackay have fared when pitting their mettle against Premier League clubs. We'll come onto that. The Championship is an extremely difficult league to get out of. If you want evidence of that look no further than the number of attempts the Bluebirds needed to get promotion. It took five tries after establishing themselves in the second tier to go up. After missing out on the playoffs by one on goals scored in 2009, Cardiff managed three successive top six finishes, but came up short on every occasion. It was fifth time lucky under Mackay in his second season as the Bluebirds clinched the Championship title. His overall managerial statistics are pretty decent. From 124 matches Mackay has won 54 (43.55%), which is better than picking up six points out of every 15 available, and lost just a quarter (33 or 26.6%). Perhaps Tan has seen sense as Mackay's win percentage is better than predecessors Dave Jones and Lennie Lawrence. Few permanent Cardiff bosses have managed to top him.
