5. John Swift (CM)
A year ago, Swift's Chelsea career was looking down and out. Struggling for form and fitness, the reliability which marked his formative years moving through the Chelsea ranks seemed to have dissipated. Enter Frank Lampard, under whose wing Swift has not only got back on track but exceeded all expectations of what he was capable of. His height and range of passing always stood him in good stead, but there have been signs this season of him adopting Lampard's knack for a perfectly timed run and pinpoint pass, resulting in a huge increase in his goalscoring return and chances created for teammates. His form led to a call from the England U19s, for whom he has now made eight unbeaten appearances. The question for Swift going forward is whether he can continue his astonishing rise, especially at a club which already has so many outstanding young midfielders on its books. (There's one more to come in this list alone). There's no doubt that the next few years could be of enormous importance for the teenager, especially as many at the club are only just starting to take notice of him when Chalobah, Baker and others have long cemented themselves as contenders for promotion. He's been counted out before though, and having proven himself a worthy student of the club's all-time greatest midfielder is no small achievement. Like Lampard, he's a box-to-box man with stamina to burn and the positional intelligence of a player several years above him. Having salvaged his career once already, Swift's biggest challenge may yet lie ahead.
