Chelsea: 10 British Youngsters Who Deserve Their Chance At Stamford Bridge

6. Lewis Baker (CM/RW)

Looking further forward, Lewis Baker represents the third generation of outstanding English midfielders to stand out in Chelsea's youth and U21 ranks. Whether he'll also be destined for a series of aimless loan moves remains to be seen, but Chelsea fans should certainly hope not. Captain of the U21s since the departure of Todd Kane to Blackburn, Baker has shown enormous maturity in leading the side to victory in the FA Youth Cup and the final of the NextGen Series. His performances were noteworthy enough to get him on the bench for this year's League Cup game against Swindon (alongside Jamal Blackman), though Mourinho opted against giving him his debut in the comfortable 2-0 win. Baker's most notable attribute is his composure, expressed through the ease with which he dominates the middle of the park while offering valuable support to the team's creative and goalscoring efforts. He takes a mean free kick and can slot home a penalty with a German's precision, perhaps appropriate considering he has something of the Bastian Schweinsteiger about him. It's a big step from U21 football to the first team, and while Baker will need careful coaching to make the most of his undeniable ability, everything's in place for him to start making his push in the near future. He notched an impressive fourteen goals from midfield last season and has the versatility so lacking among many English midfielders, being as comfortable playing wide on the right as in the centre. He is a regular in England's U19 side, having played alongside emerging stars like Everton's Ross Barkley, Southampton's Calum Chambers and teammate Nathaniel Chalobah. A poised and intelligent playmaker from just about anywhere on the pitch, Baker looks to have a bright future ahead of him.
