Chelsea Transfer News: Nemanja Matic Back To Blues For £21 Million?
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is considering a £21 million offer to bring Serbian holding midfielder Nemanja Matic back to Stamford Bridge from Benfica. Sunday's Telegraph reports that Mourinho has turned to Matic as Chelsea are unlikely to sign Colombian Fredy Guarin from Inter Milan. Matic, 25, has flourished in Portugal after failing to break into the Blues' first team during a two-year stint between 2009 and 2011. He was a makeweight in the £25 million deal the Blues did for Brazilian defender David Luiz. Chelsea are short of deeper-lying central midfield options because of injuries to Frank Lampard and Marco van Ginkel. Luiz has been used in this position alongside compatriot Ramires and Nigerian John Obi Mikel by Mourinho in recent games. Matic lined up against his former club in last season's Europa League final a match the Blues won under Rafa Benitez thanks to a stoppage time winner from Branislav Ivanovic. Despite Benfica faltering there and in the Portuguese title race to Porto at the final hurdle, Matic was named the Primeira Liga Player of the Year for 2012-13. The Estadio do Luz outfit are likely to reject Chelsea's proposed bid, despite the value of Matic increasing fivefold on the £4.15 million from when they signed him.
