Chelsea Transfers: 10 Players Who Could Be Sold By Jose Mourinho This Summer
3. Tomas Kalas
At the start of the season, Jose Mourinho identified a number of young players he was ready to blood as proof that his reputation for relying on established stars and big money imports was undeserved. Those players were Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku and Tomas Kalas. Since then, Kalas is the only one remaining at the club, but has made only two appearances, both brief cameos to waste time at the end of assured victories. Having enjoyed excellent form in his two years on loan at Vitesse Arnhem, culminating in an international debut for the Czech Republic, Kalas may not have expected to be thrust into the first team, but will no doubt feel aggrieved that his total contribution to Chelsea's season has to date amounted to less than ten minutes. Kalas is almost certain to be the latest youngster to find himself on Mourinho's discard pile by the end of the season and largely at no fault of his own. It's likely he'll be joined there by Ryan Bertrand, a club-developed youngster who performed outstandingly well in his limited opportunities this season (especially in a Carling Cup victory over Arsenal) but was allowed to go out on loan to Aston Villa, with Mourinho preferring to convert a right-back to the left than put his trust in an in-form youngster waiting for the chance to make the spot his own. That Bertrand wasn't give a chance with Cole out of form should have told Kalas that Mourinho was no more likely to take any notice of him, especially when his immediate competition is Terry and Cahill. With Zouma arriving in the summer, a youngster commanding the multi-million pound pricetag which Mourinho respects, Kalas is almost certain not to be at the club next season, and it's difficult to see why he'd want to be. The talent is there, and given how raw Zouma still is, it's difficult to see what the Frenchman will bring to the table right now that Kalas could not. Mourinho has never been a manager capable of taking risks, however, and Kalas and the other youngsters who sadly depart with him will only be the latest examples of that obstinacy.
