Chelsea Transfers: 5 Players Mourinho Must Sign To Secure Premier League
3. John Stones
Chelsea captain John Terrys contract runs until the end of next season, with no extension reportedly tabled thus far. Even with an extension, it is unlikely that Terrys playing career will go beyond one or two more seasons and it's clear that the Blues will need to find a suitable replacement before the time comes. Could Evertons John Stones is the man to fill the void when Terry is waved off? Judging by the reports of having already had a £20m bid rejected, Jose Mourinho presumably shares that view. The U21 England international is a largely like-for-like replacement; a tall and strong centre half with an intelligent style of play. Rather than lunging into tackles, Stones assesses scenarios well and wins the ball with proficiency and skill. He is also quick, good on the ball and is known for his passing ability. Under Mourinho the youngster could develop into a top player, and perhaps a future Chelsea and England captain. He is the latest England prospect and the London club would do well to secure his services before the start of the coming season to prevent another team coming in for the highly-rated centre back. It is believed Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is holding out for a sum closer to £30m, or even beyond. In todays market, English players are often overpriced, yet this may be one that pays Abramovich back in silverware for many seasons to come. For now, he is a solid defender worthy of featuring in cup competitions, allowing Mourinho greater choice when selecting his strongest side for the title challenge. It is yet to be seen whether the Chelsea manager will continue his interest in the young defender.
An admiration for the arrogant personalities in football. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Diego Simeone, even Joey Barton. If you were to ask who I'd rather have in my team, Messi or Ronaldo? The latter.
