Chelsea Transfers: Rating Mourinho's 10 Biggest Deals Of The Summer
7. Frank Lampard - RELEASED
The greatest Chelsea player of all time? Quite possibly, and undeniably the greatest ever goalscorer, a feat made all the more impressive by the fact Super Frank did it from midfield. Fans outside the club may never have quite appreciated how much he brought to the side other than goals - his positional discipline and movement were stellar and he often topped the table for assists during his peak years - but the love for him inside Stamford Bridge has been unwavering from beginning to end. His final season at Chelsea was a little disappointing, truth be told, where he struggled to keep up in faster paced games and lacked the precision in his passing and finishing which had been a hallmark of his career since arriving at the club from West Ham in ye olden days of 2001. Having broken the club's all time goalscoring record the year before with a brace against Aston Villa, it was a deserved lap of honour for him and his eight goals in all competitions - the first time he'd failed to notch double figures in the scoring charts in eleven years - was still an extremely solid total. There seemed to be a begrudging agreement that while it would be nice were he able to stay with the club forever, perhaps continuing on in a coaching capacity, his determination to extend his playing career meant it was the right time for him to leave before his decline started to put a blemish on all the wonderful memories that had made him a legend. While it was a shame when the announcement finally appeared that he would be leaving the club to sign for newly formed MLS club New York City FC, the reception was more one of appreciation than sadness. It was blighted somewhat by his accepting a six-month loan back to England with Blues' title rivals Manchester City, though no-one begrudged him the chance to keep his fitness up and perhaps continue playing at the highest level for a little while longer.
