Chelsea Transfers: Rating Mourinho's 10 Biggest Deals Of The Summer

6. Diego Costa - BOUGHT

Diego Costa's arrival had felt somewhat inevitable since rumours started picking up steam last January, particularly when Jose Mourinho revealed he had a blockbuster signing lined up for the summer. The reaction was generally positive, though there were concerns about the player's attitude and whether he would be the right fit for the club's system. A poor showing at the World Cup, where he struggled to make an impact in a Spain team which seemed set up to use their striker almost as a decoy to create space for others - not entirely dissimilar, it must be noted, to how Mourinho used Eto'o and Torres at times last similar - only stoked concerns that his outstanding goal return for Atletico last season may not translate so readily to the more robust English league. Fortunately, a couple of pre-season goals got him back in the swing of things pretty quickly and a strike on his Premier League debut against Burnley yesterday broke his duck early, even if only a simple tap-in. Mourinho has reportedly had words to help the Spaniard improve his attitude, making sure to praise his exceptional work ethic along the way, and so far, even when faced with an unjustified yellow card for simulation in the Burnley game, the striker has kept his temper in check. He's already a fan favourite for providing a genuine goalscoring threat up front and the £32 million fee looks like a good price considering he scored a whopping 36 goals in his previous campaign. There's still a question of how he'll fare against more defensively experienced sides than Burnley, but he's off to the best possible start. Atletico weren't pleased to see him go, but their positive relationship with Chelsea meant his buy-out clause did not need to be activated, allowing the Blues to avoid paying a huge amount of tax on top of an already substantial outlay. More good business from the Blues. Rating: 9/10
