CONFIRMED: Vergini Leaves Sunderland On Loan
The end is nigh for Santiago.
Santiago Vergini has officially joined Getafe on loan from Sunderland, with a view to a permanent transfer at the end of the season. The 26-year-old was told to find a new club by Dick Advocaat as the Dutchman set about building his own squad, and is now on his way to Spain following a two year loan spell on Wearside. Vergini did not travel with his teammates to their USA training camp, and was spotted leaving the U21s game at Consett early in a taxi on Tuesday night. There were several pieces of speculation over what that could have meant, but now it appears that he was leaving for talks with the top flight Spanish outfit. Throughout the 2014/15 season, the Argentine made 31 league appearances for Sunderland, appearing at right back and centre back, though he never truly settled into one role where he could nail down a regular, uncontested spot. While his moments of skill would delight and terrify fans in the stadium in equal measures, Advocaat clearly felt it was right for him to move on, though the Black Cats were obliged to sign Vergini this summer unless another club matched the agreed fee. Sunderland officially own the player, though he has now been loaned out, with very little chance of him pulling on a red and white shirt again.
