England: 5 Stars Who Should Break Through For World Cup 2014

2. Rickie Lambert

Lambert Although he is the wrong side of 30, Lambert has had a fantastic first season in the Premier League with Southampton, scoring 13 goals, leaving him as the highest scoring Englishman in the top flight. The big challenge for Lambert will be his 2nd season, if Saints survive the battle against the drop. Grant Holt was of similar ilk to Lambert, having worked his way up the league ladder for his shot at the big time, but he has failed to hit the heights of his debut season and the mention of an England call up for Holt are now a distant whisper. Lambert has just signed a new deal with Saints, keeping him at the club until 2016, a sign that Pochettino has been as taken by him as his previous managers have. He has plundered 91 goals in 162 appearances for Saints since joining from Bristol Rovers back in 2009 and is one of the few players to have scored in all four English Divisions . Lambert seems like the type of player who would take great pride in pulling on the England shirt, and although he may not be as dynamic as most of the current squad, he does offer Hodgson something different. If he could continue his rise up the ranks with the same ease he has shown to date, he could offer some serious firepower to a squad that does not boast too many natural goalscorers.
