England vs Poland - 5 Players Who Could Wreck Three Lion's World Cup Dream

5. Artur Boruc

Rewind 40 years and England faced the exact same scenario as they do now. Poland visited Wembley Stadium with the Three Lions knowing a win was imperative were they to reach the 1974 World Cup Finals, and Sir Alf Ramsey's side were in a confident mood. Yet the full-time whistle blew on a 1-1 draw after Polish goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski played a blinder, blocking England's desperate pursuit for a winner and subsequently their passage to the Finals. That's the task currently awaiting today's counterpart Artur Boruc, whom many English fans will be familiar with due to his current No.1 status at Premier League side Southampton. Though Tomaszewski was famously written off as a "clown" by Brian Clough 40 years ago, there is no questioning Boruc's stature - four consecutive clean sheets in four topflight appearances makes him the man in form. Boruc's domestic form has recently been recognised at international level with the 33-year-old displacing Arsenal's Wojciech Szcz™sny as the country's first-choice goalkeeper. And, if he can keep another shut-out tomorrow, it could be Hodgson's men made to look the clowns.
