Everton 0-0 Spurs: 5 Key Things We Learned

4. Dogged Defences Come Out On Top

On the other side of the coin there were two fabulous centre back pairings on display at Goodison. Phil Jagielka and Sylvain Distin are hugely experienced and it showed as they shackled Soldado. It was Tottenham's summer acquisition Vlad Chiriches that caught our eye most though. Michael Dawson alongside him is certainly in line for an England recall if his fine form continues, but there was a cultured stepping out of defence by the Romania captain. Chiriches will be vital at the back for his country in a couple of weeks' time as they look to upset Euro 2004 winners Greece in the World Cup playoffs. Lukaku was contained well by this Spurs duo and had to resort to dropping deep in an attempt to get the Toffees going. Both sets of fullbacks were competent here too. Seamus Coleman gave as good as his got against Jan Vertonghen because both men could have given away penalties for fouls on the other. Leighton Baines meanwhile was troubled at times by Andros Townsend, but we'll come on to discussing the new Hotspur star later. Kyle Walker had a quietly effective game too against an old teammate in Pienaar.
