Everton Transfer News: Former Celtic Winger Aiden McGeady On Roberto Martinez's Radar

Everton manager Roberto Martinez will try to secure the services of Republic of Ireland winger Aiden McGeady for next season by getting the ex-Celtic player to sign a pre-contract agreement.

McGeady, 27, is currently on the books of Russian Premier League outfit Spartak Moscow, but has been suspended from the first-team following a bust-up with coach Valery Karpin. His contract expires in the summer. According to Friday's Daily Express, the Toffees are in pole position to land McGeady as Martinez tried to sign him when he was in charge at Wigan Athletic. Spartak will want to try and recoup some of the £9.5 million they spent on McGeady in 2010 when the winter transfer window opens. The player has indicated that he intends to see out his contract and move on a free in the summer, however. Clubs interested in McGeady can begin talks with him on 1 January. Should he move to Goodison Park he would link up with international teammates Seamus Coleman, Darron Gibson and James McCarthy. Injury to regular Everton left back Leighton Baines has meant Costa Rica's Bryan Oviedo is deputizing in defence. The wide options open to Martinez are further depleted by the absence of Senegal international Magaye Gueye because of a knee injury. McGeady would compete with Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith and Steven Pienaar for a regular place in the Toffees XI.
