Every Conor McGregor UFC Fight Ranked From Worst To Best
2. Chad Mendes
Where: UFC 189
This marked the first occasion that The Notorious One headlined a Pay-Per-View card and was by far McGregor's toughest fight at the time, not to mention the closest he came to losing a fight in his UFC career up to that point.
Mystic Mac was again strongest while standing, landing some heavy left hands, but Mendes was giving as he good as he got, doing just as much damage with a brutal right hook especially throughout the first round.
While McGregor landed a lot more strikes, it was Mendes that nabbed four takedowns to McGregor's zero, wrestling the Irishman like he had never been wrestled before, using his grappling on the mat to nearly choke him out multiple occasions. Not to mention a string of savage elbows that would have ended most fighters, as he dominated nearly the entire second round in full mount.
Not quite the entire second round though.
Having stood up after just avoiding being choked out, McGregor dropped Mendes as the clock ticked down with one last big left, finishing him off against the cage with three seconds to go in the second round. A shame for Mendes who was, at worst, sitting at one round apiece on the judges scorecard, if not two-nil ahead.
