Ever since Manchester City underwent the takeover that shocked the footballing world and completely transformed the club back in 2008, the team has seen some of the world's elite players come and go.

However, while having a nearly unlimited pile of cash to use for incoming transfers certainly doesn't hurt, not all of the Citizens' big-money signings have proven to be successes.

When French defender Eliaquim Mangala signed with the club for a reported £42 million, fans hoped that they had brought in the future successor to club legend Vincent Kompany at the heart of the defence.

But it just wasn't to be. Mangala failed to justify his hefty price tag and was ultimately sold to Valencia in 2019.
