Every Player To Score On Their Newcastle Debut In The Premier League

7. Alex Mathie - Vs Sheffield Wednesday (September 13th 1993)

Arriving on Tyneside for a fee of £250,000 from Greenock Morton in 1993, Scottish forward Alex Mathie was handed his debut by Kevin Keegan against Sheffield Wednesday at St James' Park on September 13th. Although he did not start the game, Mathie replaced Nicos Papavassiliou in the 62nd minute, with Newcastle trailing 2-1. Andy Cole then levelled things up with his second of the game, before Mathie popped up with a sublime strike to put the Magpies ahead and then Malcolm Allen completed the win. Mathie played just 24 further Premier League games for Newcastle, unable to leapfrog Peter Beardsley and Cole as first-choice striker, before leaving for Ipswich Town in a £500,000 move in February 1995.
