Every Player To Score On Their Newcastle Debut In The Premier League
6. Les Ferdinand - Vs Coventry City (August 19th 1995)
After Les Ferdinand impressed at Queens Park Rangers, Kevin Keegan decided he wanted the England international forward at St James' Park and he convinced the Magpies board to pay £6 million in order to bring him to Tyneside in 1995. Interestingly, this was a full three years after Newcastle had offered £3.3 million for the forward, which had been rejected. An incredible 29 goals arrived during his first season at NUFC, with the first of those coming on his debut against Coventry City on August 19th 1995. Rob Lee had opened the scoring at St James' Park and Peter Beardsley had doubled the Magpies' advantage from the spot. Then, in the 83rd minute, Lee played an exquisite through-ball to release Ferdinand, who rounded the on-rushing goalkeeper and slotted home. What a way to introduce yourself to the Geordie faithful - a 3-0 victory and a goal. Brilliant - just like the majority of his 41 league strikes for the Magpies (from just 68 games) before he left for Tottenham Hotspur in 1997.
