Every Player To Score On Their Newcastle Debut In The Premier League
5. Stephane Guivarc'h - Vs Liverpool (August 30th 1998)
Signed by Kenny Dalglish for £3.5 million from Auxerre in the summer of 1998, Stephane Guivarc'h arrived on Tyneside having just played regularly for France during their 1998 World Cup-winning campaign. However, the fact he was substituted just 29 minutes into the home nation's opening victory over South Africa should perhaps have set alarm bells ringing on Tyneside... On saying that, Guivarc'h arrived in the North East to find that the manager who had brought him to Newcastle had gone just two games into the new season, with Ruud Gullit the new man in charge. Liverpool visited St James' Park on August 30th 1998 and, after Michael Owen had netted twice early on, Guivarc'h scored just 28 minutes into his debut. Rob Lee had won possession just outside the Liverpool box, before breaking clear and then squaring to the French forward, whose effort found the back of the net via the post. The game ended 4-1, with Owen completing his hat-trick before Patrik Berger rounded off the scoring. Guivarc'h was to feature just three more times in the Premier League, with Gullit clearly not rating him, before being sold to Rangers for the price at which he had been bought in November 1998. Absolutely bizarre - and Georginio Wijnaldum will hope his Toon career does not follow a similar path...
