Though Newcastle has often suffered from some regrettable transfer decisions, one area the Tyneside club long excelled in was between the posts.

The club enjoyed such a goalkeeping dynasty during the 2000s that the excellent Steve Harper was restricted to just 157 league appearances in two decades at the club, with longtime #1 Shay Given consistently ranked as one of the best keepers in the country during his prime.

Since then though, the Magpies shot-stopping fortunes have been mixed, to say the least. Academy graduate Jak Alnwick was tipped to do great things at St James' Park but failed to step up to the plate, looking shaky in six league appearances before being sold on to Port Vale in 2015.
