Fantasy Football Tips: 5 Essential Transfers For Gameweek 9

4. Jan Vertonghen - £7.2 Million

From one centre back to another, Jan Vertonghen has become an integral part in Spurs' defence since his move last year from Ajax. Currently on 40 points, the Belgian has forged an effective partnership with Michael Dawson as collectively the Lilywhites have conceded just four goals in six games, demonstrating how difficult it has been for opposition strikers to break through and score (bar the 3-0 defeat to West Ham, that is.) This is testament to the defence and especially Vertonghen whose defensive leadership has allowed the strikers to venture further up the field to do the damage. However all this comes at a hefty price as he's not cheap at all - £7.2 million to be exact. Sitting in 5th place and just 3 points behind leaders Arsenal in a tightly bunched pack, Hull City provide the next test for AVB's men on Sunday. It's worth noting that some personnel may be fatigued from their Europa League exploits in Moldova against Sheriff Tiraspol midweek, though Vertonghen won't necessarily be one of them as he's likely to be rested, having sat out his side's opening two group games thus far. Hopefully that means he'll be fresh and will lead Spurs to another clean sheet as they look to build on a solid start.
