The first thing any fantasy football player has to learn is that you can't just pick a squad of stars and hope to win. Countless fantasy managers will be taking the likes of Harry Kane, Eden Hazard, and Mohamed Salah into the new season. You can do the same, but you'll end up with the same amount of points as everyone else.

As strange as it might sound, the star players aren't actually the difference makers in fantasy football. The players that will really help to push your team into first place are the hidden gems or the 'differentials'; these are the players who are often overlooked and only owned by a low percentage of fantasy players, but have the potential to boost your points tally in a game-changing way.

They represent a risk, as they often play for lower-ranked teams and simply don't have that same 'wow factor' as the big names, but if you want to win big in fantasy football, you have to take some risks.

There weren't too many fantasy managers who decided to invest in the likes of Glenn Murray, Ayoze Pérez, Luka Milivojević, or Abdoulaye Doucouré this time last year, but all of those players went on to have super seasons, outperforming many of their more famous and expensive colleagues.
