In 2014, Chelsea sold divisive centre back David Luiz to Paris Saint-Germain for a then-record fee of £50 million. It was a huge price for an inconsistent defender and Chelsea were happy to accept it.

In Luiz's defence, the Brazilian helped PSG to win the domestic treble two years in a row. For the most part, he settled down and became a more rounded defender than he was at Chelsea. So, naturally, the Blues decided to buy him back in 2016. Chelsea only had to pay £34 million to bring Luiz back to Stamford Bridge, even though he was certainly a better defender than when he left. Not bad business at all.
