Fulham 1-0 Stoke: Mark Hughes Laments Refereeing Decisions

Mark Hughes was left to rue three decisions that would have changed the game as his Stoke side lost away at Fulham. The Welshman, returning to Craven Cottage for the first time since leaving the Fulham hotseat, felt his side was the more likely to win the game until a misplaced pass led to Darren Bent's winner. "In terms of the team most likely to win the game I thought that was us," said Hughes. "We had a lot of control of the game and create opportunities, clear opportunities, and I think we did that." "We were the better team today and we deserved the three points over the ninety minutes. We were poor against Norwich but the performance was a lot better today. The end product is something we need to address because we are not taking chances when we produce them, but that's been a bugbear of the team for a few years now." There were three incidents that Hughes felt the officials got wrong which ultimately cost City. "We should have had two penalties and I think Kasami should have been sent off because he raised his hands (to Eric Pieters). Those are key moments that shape the outcome of the game and those are the decisions you want the officials to get right." "I spoke to the fourth official Mike Dean (about the second incident) and he said there was contact outside the box, which there may well have been but the advantage was given and he (Walters) was through, and the guy's fallen on Jon's heel. Irrespective of the initial contact the ref has played advantage, then gives the free kick outside. I didn't understand it all." What was even more crucial was the timing of the incidents and the extent to which they would have changed the game, according to the ex-Manchester United striker. "Given the time of those incidents, early in the first half, they would have swung the game totally in our direction. Unfortunately we had to force the issue, we misplaced a pass and that's when they got the goal." "The ball fell to Darren Bent's feet and he's the one person you don't want it falling to. I think overall that was their one shot on target all game." The win for Fulham pushes them level on points with Stoke in the bottom half of the table and relieves some of the pressure on Martni Jol's shoulders
