Having watched Lewis Holtby's debut for Fulham against Southampton, it was clear to see that Meulensteen had signed a player of immense quality. Despite being positioned on the wing, the German international was able to influence proceedings by drifting in-field and sliding in teammates. Clearly those flashes of brilliance persuaded the Fulham manager to move Holtby into a more central role, as the 23-year-old started behind the frontman against Manchester United and Liverpool. In Sunday's 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, the Fulham supporters were given a sample of what they can expect from Holtby. His exquisite pass for Steve Sidwell's opening strike showcased the former Schalke midfielder's creativity. In the defeat to Liverpool, the Tottenham loanee once again gave a very good account of himself. During Fulham's best spell, which came in the first 30 minutes, Holtby looked sharp and lively, playing an instrumental role in the Cottagers' opening goal. Naturally, as Liverpool's influence and possession grew, Holtby faded. However, he continued to work and hassle for the ball, an indication that despite being on loan he is more than up for the fight. If Fulham are to remain in the Premier League then a lot will depend on Holtby. The creativity and imagination he brings to the team is something they have lacked all season and you just wonder what might have been if he had joined in the summer.
