Fulham 2-3 Liverpool: 5 Things We Learned

3. Steven Gerrard Has Reinvented Himself In A Deeper Role

Over the years, Steven Gerrard has undoubtedly been one of the greatest midfielders in Premier League history. Time after time the Liverpool captain has come to the rescue of his club, scoring countless last minute winners and 30-yard wonder strikes. Wednesday's win over Fulham was no different. The England captain produced a vintage display against the Cottagers, rounding his performance off with a calmly taken penalty. However, it was Gerrard's assist for Liverpool's first goal that was most impressive. The 33-year-old curled the ball with the outside of his right foot, finding Sturridge and dissecting Fulham's centre-backs with pin-point precision. On the night, the Liverpool captain was supreme in his new deeper position. Gerrard is no longer the marauding midfielder who once scored 24 goals in a season, instead he has adopted an almost 'quarter-back' like role, frequently dropping so deep he essentially becomes an auxiliary centre-back. The new position appears to be working wonders for Gerrard, who is able to dictate the tempo of proceedings and spray the ball around the park. Furthermore, it allows him to provide vital protection for a sometimes shaky Liverpool defence. As many great midfielders have over the years, such as Andrea Pirlo and Xavi, Gerrard is moving further back down the pitch. However, based on his recent performances, it is a move which could seriously prolong his career for club and country.
