Jerry Bengtson, the 6ft 1 inch, 25 year old striker is one of many Honduran products to make the move over to the MLS in recent years, following the likes of Victor Bernardez, Marvin Chavez, Roger Espinoza and Andy Najar, all of whom can currently be considered to be some of the MLS' finest players . Although Bengtson has not fully put his stamp on the league yet he is one who has already gained world-wide recognition thanks to the Olympics. The thin, wiry striker scored 3 goals in 4 appearances for his national team. A truly outstanding achievement considering he scored 3 out of the five goals which Honduras scored in the tournament, including the only goal which resulted in a crushing exit for Spain. He can also boast 9 goals in 23 appearances for Honduras (excluding the olympics) It's not only on the international stage where he has shone though. At his previous club, Montagua, Bengtson scored 26 goals in 54 appearances. Almost half a goal per game, he was also the top scorer of the Honduran league in the 2010/11 season alongside being the top scorer of the 09/10 season. So it's clear the Bengtson is no Nicklas Bendtner. He does actually score goals domestically as well. There's no doubt that New England are in desperate need of some inspiration. They currently rest 8th in the Eastern Conference, 14 points off 5th place. Pressure is mounting on Head Coach Jay Heaps and it seems like it's going to be the third season in a row without making the playoffs for the Revs. A poacher such as Bengtson could certainly help raise fan's spirits at least until the end of the season before attempting to mount a more serious play off challenge next season. Bengtson joined as the Revs' one and only DP on the 5th July and although he has missed many fixtures due to the Olympic break, the striker has still been able to score 4 goals in 7 appearances, starting 4 of them. He has already hit the ground running with some style and if a partnership with the prolific power-house Saer Sene can be solidified, plus his recent Olympic form carried into the league. Then the future for the Revs may not as bleak as many imagine.
