La Liga Round Up: Matchday 8

La Liga 600 With the international break looming and decisive games ahead for many European teams, match day 8 kicked off in La Liga with the usual showing of world class talent and plenty of goals. On Friday night, Villarreal continued their extremely impressive start to the season and it now looks to be a promising campaign for the Yellow Submarines.Their 3-0 victory over Granada came courtesy of goals from Bruno, Dos Santos and Pina and helped them to remain in the Champions League places, just 2 points behind Real Madrid. The other game on Friday night saw mid-table Malaga fall to a 1-0 defeat at home against struggling Osasuna, with Riera's goal in the 24th minute snatching a valuable 3 points for the visitors, lifting them to 18th in the league. Saturday's action kicked off with Elche securing their second win of the campaign with a 2-1 victory over Espanyol. Coro's brace for the hosts, either side of Thievy's goal for Espanyol, lifted Elche to 12th place in the table while Espanyol hover in 8th position; now six points off the Champions League spots. Struggling Rayo Vallecano secured a valuable 3 points with a 2-1 victory over Real Sociedad. The Basque side are competing in this seasons Champions League but their domestic campaign has been a disappointment, having only picked up 7 points so far this season. Viera's 89th minute penalty condemned the visitors to their 3rd league defeat of the season and lifted Vallecano off the foot of the table. Real Madrid needed a late comeback to secure a 3-2 victory against Levante, who led twice in the match. Diawara put the hosts ahead after 57 minutes but Sergio Ramos equalised 4 minutes later. El Zhar must have thought he'd scored the winner when he found the net 4 minutes from time to put Levante back in the lead but Morata equalised as the clock ticked towards 90 minutes. Then, Christiano Ronaldo found the net deep into stoppage time to give Real the victory but they are still 5 points off the top spot. Barcelona continued their 100% start to the season with a 4-1 over struggling Real Valladolid. Guerra gave the visitors the lead after 10 minutes but Alexis Sanchez equalised 4 minutes later. In the second half, Xavi gave Barca the advantage before Sanchez added his second of the game. Twenty minutes from time, Neymar made it 4 and capped off an impressive performance. Sunday's action saw Athletico Madrid keep up the pace with league leaders Barcelona as they also maintained their perfect start to the season. Diego Costa's brace helped Athletico to a 2-1 win over Celta Vigo, with Nolito on the scoresheet for the visitors. Sevilla's 2-1 victory over Almeria heaped more misery upon the visitors, who now found themselves stuck to the root of the table and are still the only team in the division without a win to their name. Gameiro gave Sevilla an early lead before Rodri equalised after 24 minutes. The visitors must have thought they would be leaving with a point but Rakitic had other ideas and his late goal condemned Almeria to their 5th league defeat of the season. High-flying Getafe claimed 5th spot after their 3-1 victory over Real Betis, with Leon grabbing a brace before Colunga extended the hosts lead to 3. In the second half, Rafa pulled one back for Betis but a comeback was not on the cards. The final game of the weekend saw Athletic Bilbao are Valencia draw 1-1, leaving both sides 4 points off the Champions League places. Banega gave Valencia the lead for the spot shortly before half-time but Mikel Rico equalised for the Basque's in the 76th minute. There were no Monday night games this week due to the international break.
