Liverpool: 10 Highly-Rated Talents Who Threw It All Away

2. Stan Collymore

For many, Collymore is one of the most gifted footballers to throw his career away. After being a prolific goalscorer at Nottingam Forest, Liverpool broke the British transfer fee and signed the striker for £8.5M. Despite netting 41 goals in two seasons on Merseyside, that number could have been much greater. Together, he and Robbie Fowler formed a fantastic partnership up front and became one of the most feared pairing in the Premier League. However, that was only when Collymore wanted to be in his best form: the forward very much played when he felt like it and often sulked around the pitch not helping his team-mates. He was involved in a number of off-field controversies - from staying out late at night, to saying that he was not getting the service he wanted at Liverpool; a quote that did not go down too well with his team-mates. His manager at the time, Roy Evans, said that Collymore didn't turn up to training during his second season on Merseyside and knew a move away was closing in. Collymore had a chance to become a Liverpool legend and be compared to the likes of Ian Rush and Kenny Dalgish. He certainly had the talent, however not the attitude to become a great at Anfield and become very much a journeyman and is now more famous for being a host on TalkSport.
